Sermon Questions
In what two ways does Elisha demonstrate his total dependence on his master? (hint: consider his conversations with Elijah and the others prophets). Discuss what Elisha clinging tightly to Elijah teaches us about how we should carry out the mission Jesus has given us.
What is the one thing Elisha asks of Elijah? Did he ask for the right thing? Would you say it's natural for you to depend on the Holy Spirit, or do you tend to depend on your own resources? Discuss.
Why is it so crucial for God’s prophets to be able to see spiritual realities? One of the tasks of the Holy Spirit who was poured out at Pentecost is to open the eyes of every believer to perceive spiritual reality like the prophets. Share an example from your own life when the Holy Spirit used the Word (Scripture, preaching, teaching, etc) to help you see something in a new light (about God, the gospel, yourself, etc).
Look at 2 Kings 2:13-14 and identify the three ways Elisha demonstrates that he’s content to imitate Elijah and live in his shadow. What does it look like to imitate and live in the shadow of our master Jesus? What’s the Holy Spirit’s role in our ability to carry out the mission Jesus has called us to?
